The Senate Commerce Committee is set to vote on President Joe Biden’s nominee for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on July 12, moving along the process for a key nomination that has been delayed since 2021.
The FCC is a five-member board that creates the regulations for radio, television, satellite, and internet communications. Since the former fifth seat and the previous chair Ajit Pai left the FCC in 2021, the commission has only had four members, leaving a split with two members of each party.
Opposition to the nomination of Gigi Sohn to the commission’s fifth seat in October 2021 led to her eventual withdrawal this past spring. President Biden’s new nominee, Anna Gomez, currently serves as a senior adviser for the State Department’s Bureau of Cyberspace and Digital Policy.
